XRP is still below its 2017 peak while bitcoin and ether compound

XRP has not made its early holders rich the way bitcoin and ether have. The token changed hands near $1.34 in mid-October 2026 and is still far below its 2017 cycle peak, while bitcoin, which traded around $1,000 at the start of 2017, sits above $82,000 and ether trades near $2,440. Put simply, the two assets XRP is endlessly measured against are the winners of the last cycle. XRP is the counterexample.

Why has XRP lagged bitcoin and ether since 2017?

Three forces explain most of the gap: where XRP's supply comes from, what the token is actually used for, and where its legal status sits. Bitcoin and ether spent a decade turning their tokens into collateral, settlement assets and corporate treasury reserves. XRP is used mainly to move value between payment networks fast and cheaply. That is a real product with real customers, and it is a thinner one than the market rewards today.

Ripple originally locked 55 billion XRP into escrow contracts on the XRP Ledger itself, releasing up to 1 billion on the first day of each month. Almost all of it goes straight back into new escrow: about 700 million to 800 million is typically relocked, leaving net new supply near 200 million to 300 million a month. About 31.4 billion XRP, just under a third of the 100 billion cap, sat in escrow as of October 2026. The mechanism works as designed, and it turns supply into a scheduled, known variable rather than a scarcity story.

Roughly 1 billion XRP unlocks again on November 1.

How far behind is XRP in raw numbers?

XRP was 63% below its $3.65 record high and 53% below the $2.90 it traded a year earlier, based on market data in early October 2026. Its market cap sits in the $84 billion to $88 billion range, fifth by market value, on a circulating supply that data providers place between roughly 59.8 billion and 63.1 billion XRP. Price that circulating supply at $3.65 and the token would be worth well over $200 billion.

Bitcoin's market cap is about $1.65 trillion. Ether's is roughly $298 billion.

The 2025 to 2026 swing is what turned this into a story. XRP averaged $2.50 in 2025 and touched $3.65, with market cap at times running past $200 billion. In 2026 the average price is $1.38, the high was $2.41 and the low was about $0.99. That leaves the token down roughly 27% this year and about 45% over twelve months, while bitcoin's dominance climbed back toward 57% of total crypto market cap. Dominance rising means capital concentrating in the majors, which is the opposite of what XRP needs.

Anyone who bought in 2017 and never sold is watching the asset they believed in become the laggard.

Why hasn't spot ETF money lifted XRP?

Spot XRP exchange-traded funds have absorbed money without moving the price. US spot products launched in November 2025 and have taken in roughly $1.80 billion of cumulative net inflows, with total net assets near $1.51 billion as of October 14. That is genuine, verifiable demand, the kind that arrives because an allocator has to buy the asset, not because sentiment improved.

Scale is the difference. The six US spot XRP funds plus the Bitwise index product hold roughly 1.19 billion XRP, about 1.2% of the 100 billion cap. Bitcoin ETFs lost $261.5 million on October 14 alone and still hold about $104.8 billion in net assets. XRP funds took in $740,400 that day. A dollar moving in or out barely dents bitcoin, while the same dollar is visible in XRP.

The gap showed up in August 2026, when XRP fell about 5% to $1.03 in a week that bitcoin, ether and solana spent gaining 1% to 4%. XRP ETFs did post a fourth straight inflow week, but new money collapsed roughly 93% to about $1 million. In October the streak continued, with 12 consecutive weeks of net inflows and $3.14 million arriving on October 6, and the token still traded down.

What is regulatory uncertainty worth in XRP's price?

The CLARITY Act, the bill built to split digital asset oversight between the CFTC and the SEC, passed the House 294-134 in July 2025 and cleared the Senate Banking Committee 15-9 in May 2026. On September 15, 2026 its cloture motion failed 50-49, ten votes short of the 60 needed to proceed. Senator Thom Tillis switched to no and filed a motion to reconsider the next day. Congress then left Washington ahead of the November midterms.

Prediction markets price the chance of passage before January 1, 2028 at roughly 27%.

Without a federal framework, oversight reverts to agencies working case by case under existing authority, which is the ambiguity banks and fund allocators dislike most. For a payments token whose pitch is institutional settlement, that is a direct cost: an allocator who cannot classify a position cannot size it. Bitcoin and ether got their spot ETFs under a settled understanding of commodity treatment. XRP's route to the same certainty ran through the bill that stalled, and a revised vehicle is now a post-election question.

Another quarter of delay means another quarter of the same debate.

Is Ripple's actual business growing?

Ripple keeps shipping products. On October 14, 2026 it partnered with DriveWealth to add RLUSD settlement and cross-border payments across a brokerage network serving more than 100 global partners, with European settlement integration ahead of a planned US expansion. Through 2026, integrations touching FedNow payments, deposit support for Singapore users through Gemini, and continued use of XRP in on-demand liquidity kept the payments story in front of buyers.

Stablecoin supply on the XRP Ledger reached $1.14 billion out of $2.45 billion issued across the XRP Ledger and Ethereum as of October 12. For a settlement-focused network that is a real footprint. It is also not the demand pattern that turned ether into the base layer for an entire on-chain economy, and that difference matters for how value accrues to the token.

Trading rails are not the same thing as monetary premium.

October showed the other side of the ledger. When 1.6 billion XRP, worth about $2.16 billion at $1.35, moved to Binance, traders read it as future sell-side supply and the token underperformed. Evernorth, an XRP treasury company holding 473 million tokens, pushed its Nasdaq debut from October 8 to October 12. In the same session XRP fell 5.58%, against 2.76% for bitcoin and 5.33% for ether.

What should XRP traders watch from here?

Start with the calendar. Up to 1 billion XRP unlocks from escrow on November 1, and the useful number is not the unlock. It is what Ripple relocks within a day or two, since that determines the real change in circulating supply. After that, the CLARITY Act revival question after the midterms, and whether XRP ETFs can keep taking in double-digit millions a week instead of single-digit millions.

Resistance has a shape. Glassnode data cited in May 2026 put roughly 1.16 billion XRP in the $1.45 to $1.46 break-even zone, held by buyers who have been underwater since. Every retest of that band offers those holders an exit at cost, which is how a token can absorb steady inflows and still fail to break out.

Positioning matters as much as conviction. XRP has moved further than bitcoin in both directions: it gained 38% in the two weeks after the August 2026 low, then lost 18.7% from its September high while bitcoin fell 7%. Derivatives positioning and liquidations amplify that spread.

No forecast here. Just the numbers on the calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Why is XRP down when bitcoin is near $82,000?

Bitcoin and ether absorbed institutional and treasury demand over a decade, while XRP's use case stays narrow and its supply grows on a known schedule. Bitcoin's dominance rising toward 57% of total market cap pulls capital toward the majors when risk appetite fades.

If XRP ETFs keep taking in inflows, why is the price falling?

The funds are too small relative to the asset. US spot XRP ETFs hold about 1.19 billion XRP, roughly 1.2% of supply, against $1.51 billion in net assets while bitcoin ETFs hold over $104 billion. Absorbed supply is also offset by holders sitting at break-even who sell on every rally.

Does Ripple's monthly escrow unlock flood the market?

Historically no. Ripple releases up to 1 billion XRP on the first of each month but relocks 700 million to 800 million, leaving net new supply near 200 million to 300 million. About 31.4 billion XRP stays in escrow, and traders watch the relocking number, not the headline.
